PEACE MAKES SECOND TRANSPLANT IN SPAIN

This man prefers not to give his name or details of his story, but wanted to appear before the media to " thank " the work of the medical team that has treated him in the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid. The health center has transplanted two arms him almost from the armpit, after the patient 's lost in an industrial accident in 2012 which was electrocuted by high tension and where the abdomen and legs were also injured . This is the second operation of its kind to be held in Spain , the first operation was performed by Dr. Dug in Valencia in 2008 - and is the fifth of its kind worldwide .The operation was performed a few weeks ago and was attended by a multidisciplinary team of over 20 professionals who were coordinated by César Luis Landin Married , the Department of Plastic , Reconstructive and Burns Great hospital. As explained Married to THE WORLD , the operation was particularly complex given the " internal scars " presenting patients and tissues that were due to electrocution he suffered. " The current flows through the noble structures of the body , causing severe damage , making it difficult microsurgery ," he noted. Moreover, the fact of having to replace the arm above the elbow was also a special challenge. The surgeons had to reconnect the bones , muscles, blood vessels, nerves and skin of the extremities of the donor with the recipient's body , which is a "real tatting " , as pointed out in a press conference Landin .The doctors added that the patient should receive immunosuppressive medication for life and there is a risk of rejection. "You can produce any acute rejection , but these problems can be successfully controlled in most patients," they said .
Currently, the patient's arms are immobilized with splints to ensure complete healing and integration, but doctors expect that after a period of rehabilitation to restore function and with it, the lost autonomy.
"We estimate that over a period of three to six months, you can flex and stretch your elbows and that within eight to 15 months to get back mobility in their hands," said Landin. The recovery of sensitivity, he added, is a gradual and long process.
"The difficulties were many, but it makes up is that a patient who is dependent 100% can get back to fend for itself," he underlined his married part.
The patent has assured afraid "of what I am or I will not be able to recover," but he was "very excited and eager" to work to regain maximum function.
